Income Support Cuts
« on: April 12, 2008, 09:12:04 PM »
 >:(   I have just found out that my Income Support will be stopping in October this year because my children are over 12yrs old. This is down to a new policy that was sneaked in Dec 2007 while most people were busy with other stuff. I would not have even known had I not accidentally come across an article on the net as no one from the benefits department has mentioned a word about it. That's why I thought it might be a good idea to post the info here; I'm sure there may be other parents on this site that are relying on I.S. but struggling with Mental Health problems:

Basically I.S stops for parents with children over 12yrs this Oct. 2008
                                                                 over 10yrs next Oct. 2009
and over 7yrs the following Oct. 2010

This means that I will be forced to try yet again for Disability Allowance , with all the humiliation that that entails, probably won't get it again anyway and then I'll be made to switch to Job Seekers Allowance , which in my current state is an absolute joke! So, the streets then is it for those not deemed sick enough for Disability and not well enough to work at the present time and with children going through some of the most important years of their lives? Marvellous!

Hi Hope. Thanks for sharing this information.

That's awful isn't it? Surely they must have a better strategy of replacing that lost money? I know how demoralising it can be to apply for Disability Living Allowance. I didn't fill out my first application very well. I was feeling quite down and I tried to put a positive spin on things ..... BIG MISTAKE ..... lol.
My advice to anyone filling out a DLA application is to get proper help. The best people, I think, would be MIND. They have a few different drop in sessions where you can get benefits advice.

Can't you get 'income support on an incapacity basis?' I think that after six months or a year (not sure) this is converted to incapacity benefit.

Martin.  :)
Never a failure, always a lesson.

Thanks. I have had help in the past but not from Mind so I think I will look into that. One of the problems is that they never seem to agree to it on the first application and when it comes around to sorting the reapplication I am either ill or gone off on a tangent for a while and couldn't give a stuff about it!
